GHG emission reductions : quantify them and communicate on your product improvement

"making the most of eco-design actions by measuring progress made on your product environmental performance"

QuantiGES: a quick introduction

GHG emission reductions are quantified net benefits, resulting from the improvement of a product (comparing to a previous version of the product), in an approach of product life cycle thinking.

It is a way to communicate on your actions to reduce the carbon imports of your product on its whole life cycle, and considering all actors of its value chain.

GHG emission reductions are quantifying by assessing the consequences of an action compared to a reference scenario.

QuantiGES is a method developed by ADEME, to easily quantify and communicate on the outcomes of specific actions in terms of GHG reductions. This method is based on a monocriterion assessment (GHG impacts). For instance, it can be used to quantify the emissions reduction from implementing a new product design compared to a reference one (previous version). Through the creation of a consequence tree, QuantiGES enables you to assess the direct and indirect outcomes of your decisions.

QuantiGES can be used at different stages, from early design phases to communication and marketing.

The methodological guide includes a summary sheet, that presents results in a formal way (environmental reporting). It summarises all the key steps of the quantification process: consequence tree, quantification scope, reference scenario description.

Why using QuantiGES to communicate about a product?

QuantiGES presents several advantages when used for product environmental communication:

  • It enables a robust and positive environmental communication on a product improvement action, to decision makers, stakeholders or clients.
  • By quantifying net benefits from eco-design actions (environmental efficiency of an action), it enables to promote a quantified environmental improvement approach on product design.
  • It meets ISO 14001:2015 requirements to include a life cycle perspective in product design.

If you want to know more about your product and assess other environmental impacts, QuantiGES can be included in a broader approach, for instance a eco-design approach based on a multicriteria assessment.

Why working with Solinnen?

Solinnen experts have an extensive experience working with tools and databases required to quantify GHG emission reductions. They can support your eco-design process to provide you with alternatives and recommendations to improve your products. They can help you sensitising your employees, investors, decision makers, hence promoting your eco-design process.

With their expertise in life cycle assessment critical reviews, Solinnen experts know the risks related to communicating mono-criterion assessment results and benefits assessment. Therefore, they will provide you with the best advices for an appropriate and transparent communication.

Thanks to our active involvement in normalisation group AFNOR AACC (i.e. “Commission GES”) and in eco-design expert groups, Solinnen contributes to the definition of the best practices in assessment and communicating GHG emission reductions.
