Ecodesign

Ecodesign is a product and service design approach, aiming at reducing environmental impacts over their life cycle. This method is based on a global and multicriteria assessment, including many types of environmental impacts et therefore avoiding pollution transfers. Environmental impacts can be reduced, while maintaining an iso-performance et developing new functions or services.

The French government’s Roadmap for circularity (Feuille de route pour l’économie circulaire, FREC) defines ecodesign as one area of action for the transition towards circularity. It is also encouraged in the framework of the Extended Producer Responsibility, having a key role in R&D and Research & Innovation. More specifically, ecodesign can meet more efficiently the requirements of the ISO 14001:2015 standard – Environmental management systems, regarding the inclusion of products life cycle when defining the relevant environmental aspects for the company’s organization.

Why ecodesigning your products or services?

Ecodesign is innovative. It can be applied to existing products: it helps improving their environmental performance while maintaining or improving other performances (technical, durability,…). It can be applied to new products as well, by including environmental criteria early in the design process.

Ecodesign is about making links between technical feasibility, quality control, cost control and environmental concerns. By finding the best compromises between all these criteria, it can increase your sales potential, improve your image among your clients and your staff, while reducing your production costs.

Companies which have adopted ecodesign as a design practice also noticed an improvement of their general operation: ecodesign can strengthen the synergies between your team and make them work better together. Studies showed that more than 95% of companies who applied it increased their profitability or remain with constant benefits. The return on their investment is positive with a 10% increase on the margin of the ecodesigned product. Compagnies also get a better understanding of the environmental impacts of their products’ components or ingredients. Ecodesign can also be an opportunity to improve their relationship with their supply chain, and to enhance responsible actions about their products put on the market.

Nowadays, being ahead in your sector on environmental aspects can be a good opportunity to get a bigger market share.

Why Solinnen for helping you implementing ecodesign in your company?

Solinnen experts help you in setting up an ecodesign approach and assist your teams in appropriating this practice. Our experience will help you anticipating and managing potential issues, and make sure each step is properly completed, to make it a success.

Solinnen has been assisting companies in integrating ecodesign for many years. Philippe Osset, Solinnen’s president, contributes to the improvement of the practice, by being involved in AFNOR’s X30U standardisation commission. Philippe has also been involved in the NF X30-264 standard drafting, which contains a practical application of the recommendations from ISO/TR 14062 for setting up an ecodesign approach.
