Ecodesign is a product and service design approach, aiming at reducing environmental impacts over their life cycle. This method is based on a global and multicriteria assessment, including many types of environmental impacts et therefore avoiding pollution transfers. Environmental impacts can be reduced, while maintaining an iso-performance et developing new functions or services.
The French government’s Roadmap for circularity (Feuille de route pour l’économie circulaire, FREC) defines ecodesign as one area of action for the transition towards circularity. It is also encouraged in the framework of the Extended Producer Responsibility, having a key role in R&D and Research & Innovation. More specifically, ecodesign can meet more efficiently the requirements of the ISO 14001:2015 standard – Environmental management systems, regarding the inclusion of products life cycle when defining the relevant environmental aspects for the company’s organization.
