Philippe Osset appointed as chairman of ISO TC59/ SC17-Sustainable development in buildings and civil engineering works

Solinnen experts contribute in depth to the drafting of international standards – ISO

At ISO (International Organization for Standardization), Subcommittee SC17 of Technical Committee TC59 produces standards in the field of “Sustainable Development in Buildings and Civil Engineering Works”. Philippe, who has been mandated for several years to represent France in ISO standardization work, takes over the presidency from January 2018, for 5 years. The work in progress is detailed in the table below. In addition to work underway at the European level, CEN TC350, this ISO work applies worldwide, especially in high-growth countries where the construction sector is very dynamic in large volumes.

“This new responsibility, in a sector that is dear to me, is exciting!” (Philippe)

“I would like to thank my colleagues from French and international standardization working groups, AFNOR, and my coworkers at Solinnen. I hope this support will be constant during future works! This support is essential for these works to succeed, i.e. for producing standards which will be applicable during building design, while providing a real added-value to the sector. I would particularly like to thank Jacques Lair, former chair of SC17, for the precious information he transmitted to me regarding the ongoing works and the participants to these works.”

Philippe holds an Engineering Master’s Degree from the Ecole Centrale in Paris (ECP92), has been practicing Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and applying it, in particular in the building sector, since january 1994. Philippe works on a recurring basis with industrials from the building sector, with architects and public authorities, in France, in Europe and worldwide. This sector is, and has always been, one of the leaders in applying LCA, in particular to buildings and construction products, especially with the development of EN 15804-compliant EPD (Environmental Product Declaration). For that matter, France is in a world leading position regarding sustainable development in building design.

Philippe has been participating for many years to standardisation works within AFNOR’s P01E commission – Sustainable development in construction -, which is a mirror group of ISO TC59/SC17 and CEN TC350. Moreover, Philippe has been participating to ISO TC207 for many years, mandated by AFNOR’s X30U commission – Tools for environmental management -. He has been working group convenor, for instance in SC5 focused on LCA standardisation, and SC3 focused on environmental communication.
